Avenal, CaliforniaAvenal is a city located in Kings County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,674. Geography is located at 36°1'30" North, 120°7'14" West (36.025086, -120.120605). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²). 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,674 people, 1,928 households, and 1,640 families residing in the city. The population density is 296.3/km² (767.3/mi²). There are 2,061 housing units at an average density of 41.6/km² (107.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.84% White, 12.61% Black or African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 47.38% from other races, and 2.79% from two or more races. 65.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,928 households out of which 60.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% are non-families. 11.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.14 and the average family size is 4.30. In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 13.5% from 18 to 24, 46.5% from 25 to 44, 15.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 289.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 403.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,710, and the median income for a family is $28,019. Males have a median income of $30,802 versus $20,852 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,090. 30.7% of the population and 28.3% of families are below the poverty line.
