Austwell is a city located in Refugio County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 192.

Geography

Austwell is located at 28°23'25" North, 96°50'37" West (28.390413, -96.843555). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²). 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 192 people, 88 households, and 60 families residing in the city. The population density is 205.9/km² (527.5/mi²). There are 134 housing units at an average density of 143.7/km² (368.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.67% White, 1.56% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.77% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 57.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 88 households out of which 21.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.72. In the city the population is spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $23,750, and the median income for a family is $20,000. Males have a median income of $37,917 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,146. 33.5% of the population and 32.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.4% of those under the age of 18 and 33.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
