There are many different types of Austrian Beer to be found. One of the most common brands of beer to be found in Austria is Stiegl, founded in 1492. Stiegl brews both a helles (a light lager) and a Weissbier (Hefeweizen), as well as other specialty beers. There are also many other more local and regional breweries to be found as well. In the eastern provinces can be found Ottakringer and Nussdorf from Vienna. In and around Styria in the South are the popular brands Goesser and Puntigamer. From Carinthia comes Hirter. In Lower Austria can be found Egger, Zwettler, Schwechater, and the popular Wieselburger. From the more westernly parts of Austria come Zipf and Kapsreiter in Upper Austria. In that province can also be found the famed Freistadt beer. The breweries organization is unique in that the brewery is a commune - owned and operated by those individuals who own a house within the city walls, thus the name of the town Freistadt (free-city). Continuing West, in the province of Salzburg (state) comes the afformentioned Stiegl, as well as Augustinerbru and Edelweiss. Weissbier (wheat beer) is the most popular type of beer in this region. From Tyrol and Vorarlberg comes Falkenstein, Frastanz, Mohrenbrau and the popular Fohrenburg.
