Auguste-douard MarietteAuguste-Edouard Mariette was a French Egyptologist (born in Boulogne-sur-Mer February 12, 1821 - died in Cairo January 18, 1881 ) and held the title "pasja" since 1879. He discovered a lot of temples, such as those in Edfu and Abydos. One of the most famous sites that he excavated was the Serapeum in Memphis (1851). There isn't much information about the work in Memphis because most of the discoveries were not accurately published. Mariette was also a key-figure in the foundation of the rich National Museum of Cairo. Works of Mariette: Le Srapeum de Memphis ( 1857 - 1864 ); Abydos, description des fouilles (1870); Monuments divers (1878); Les papyrus gyptiens du muse de Boulaq (1870); Les mastabas de l'ancien Empire (1882-1886, ed. d. Maspero ). Source - Winkler Prins Encyclopaedie, dertiende deel LOD-MON, zesde druk, 1952, p. 374.
