August Gillhaus

August Gilhaus, American Socialist. He was the Socialist-Labor Party's candidate for President in 1908, and the SLP's candidate for Vice President in 1912 and 1916. In 1908, Gilhaus was substituted for the original nominee, Morris (Morrie) R. Preston, a miner who was arrested on murder charges during a citywide strike in Goldfield, Nevada, in 1907. Preston served 10 years of a 20-year sentence before being released in 1917. Gilhaus and his running mate, Donald L. Munro of Virginia, received 14,029 votes. In 1912, as the VP candidate on the ticket with Arthur Elmer Reimer, Gilhaus got 29,213 votes. In 1916, again running with Reimer, the two got 14,670 votes. Gilhaus' date of death and burial place are unknown.
