Atyrau

Atyrau is a city in Kazakhstan. It is the capital of the Atyrau Oblysy. It has just under 200,000 inhabitants.

History

The city was founded in 1645 as a Russian military base. Until 1992 its name was Guriev.

Geography

Atyrau is Kazakhstan's main harbor city on the Caspian Sea at the delta of the Ural River.
