Assimilated Jews are Legal Jews who for various reasons are ignorant about traditional Jewish culture called Judaism. The orthodox view distinguishes between those who are simply ignorant about what it means to be a jew and those who choose to reject Judaism. Those who might not define themselves first & foremost as Jews and negative agnostics would be considered in the first category, while those in the second category such as atheists and agnostics are considered to be Jews in apostasy.
