Ashley County, ArkansasAshley County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 24,209. The county seat is Hamburg. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,432 km² (939 mi²). 2,386 km² (921 mi²) of it is land and 46 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.91% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,209 people, 9,384 households, and 6,906 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 10,615 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.78% White, 27.10% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.73% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 3.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,384 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02. In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,758, and the median income for a family is $37,370. Males have a median income of $35,089 versus $19,501 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,702. 17.50% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line.
