Ascot, Queensland

Ascot, Queensland, is generally regarded to be one of the oldest and most prestigious suburbs of Brisbane, Australia. Located 7 km from Brisbane, the suburb is well catered for in terms of public transport. Playing host to Eagle Farm Racecourse, Ascot is best known for its racing carnivals, and for Racecourse Road, with its cafes, restaurants, boutique shops and the gracious poinciana trees lining the street. Historically, the land belonged to the Aboriginal Turrbal clan who occupied all the land on the north of the Brisbane river. In 1855, pastoralist, James Sutherland, purchased a large portion of area including Ascot and its surrounds. And in 1882 the railway line was extended to Ascot station for ease of access to the racecourse that had already been established (ABS). The population in Ascot was 4,602 people in 2001 and the average house price for the 2002/2003 year was $575,500 (REIQ).
