Ascensin Esquivel Ibarra was President of Costa Rica from 1902 to 1906. Born in the Nicaraguan town of Rivas, he became a naturalized Costa Rican in 1869. He first ran for the presidency in 1889, but was defeated by Jos Joaqun Rodrguez. The election that saw him elected in 1901 was his second presidential bid.
