Asahi, Yamagata (Nishimurayama)

Asahi (朝日町; -machi) is a town located in Nishimurayama District, Yamagata, Japan. The town has no special relationship with another Asahi in the same prefecture. Asahi literally means "morning sun". The town is named after Asahi Mountains, which shines bright in the morning light. As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 8,820 and a density of 44.83 persons per km². The total area is 196.73 km².

History

The town was established in 1954 by merging Miyajuku, Oya, and Nishi-imogawa villages.
