Artemesinin

Artemesinin is a sesquiterpene lactone found in Chinese wormwood (Artemisia annua). It has been used to treat malaria in China for over 1500 years. It is believed that the endoperoxide bridge moiety reacts with heme when the malaria parasite digests red blood cells, producing free radicals that inhibit PfATP6, a SERCA-type enzyme. Artemesinin has been shown to compete with thapsigargin for SERCA binding, though artemesinin is much less toxic to mammalian cells.
