Aris FcAris FC is a Greek football club, part of the Aris sports club established in 1914, in the city of Thessaloniki. The jersey color is yellow and black. It is one of the leading sports clubs of Greece, especially the basketball section, which has won 18 domestic league titles - 10 Championships, 8 Cups and 3 international titles (1993 European Cup, 1997 Korac Cup, 2003 Champion's Cup). The football section historically has not been as successful, having won only 3 National Championships (1928, 1932, 1946) and 1 National Cup (1970). Even so, the club remains very popular in North Greece. In a caf in the Votsi district on the 25th of March 1914, a company of 22 people decided to establish a club. The first dilemma they faced concerned its name. Its founders opted for a name that was divine, full of grandeur and majesty, a name that would inspire awe. Thus begun the history of ARIS, who soon begun to dominate football in Thessaloniki and became one of the most powerful football clubs in Greece. The actualization of this idea came 5 months later, in August 1914. The team soon became very popular in Thessaloniki, who saw in ARIS a powerful and healthy club that possessed all the qualities necessary to exploit the athletic ideal and promote, all around Greece, not only itself but Thessaloniki in general. ARIS never ceased to be the true one and only king of Northern Greek. Imposing and powerful, he was always the Olympiad God of Greek football, a god whose temple, Charilaou, has the capacity for more than 20.000 worshipers. The emblem of the team is the god of war resting, always on guard to fight if necessary. The colors of the team are yellow and black, reminiscent of Byzantium, where Thessaloniki has always been the second most important city of the Empire. ARIS premiered on 25th of March 1914 and was destined to become one of the biggest and most historic teams of the country. The date, 25th of March, the founders chose has a very special historic connotation for Greece and Orthodoxy as it is the date of the Greek revolution against the Turks. It inspired some of these courageous and visionary youngsters from the just liberated Thessaloniki, to make their very own personal revolution, to establish a team that would assume a leading role in Greek football, a team compatible with their own winning attitude, at an age when their blood was running boiling hot in their veins. This fine founding company that was gathered together in a caf in the Votsi district gave a name to its vision worthy of its own ideology and goals. Thus became ARIS! With a name taken from Greek mythology, honoring the god of war, the new team begun its course in Greek football history. The spark of the founders turned to fire and the fire to a burning inferno! ARIS became a club that wrote, and continues to write, its own distinct history, a club worshiped by thousands, making it something that exceeds mere club preference 8 years after the establishment of ARIS Athletic Club, the basketball section of the team was formed. Just as in football, ARIS basketball was destined to make the citizens of Thessaloniki proud. ARIS' fifth consecutive Thessaloniki championship, in 1930, coincided with the teams rise to the top of Greece, as it was this year that ARIS won the first National Championship in its history. In 1979 the basketball team of Aris wins his first championship in "modern times" and begins his empire. The 28th of Septeber of 1979 was a great day for profesional sports in Greece. That day Nikos Galis signed with Aris and changed the history of the club and and greek basketball. On the 23rd of April, 1983, ARIS once again sits on the throne of the Greek Champion. Having lost in the championship game which took place in neutral Corfu for the 1984 championship, ARIS moves quick and transfers another of Greece's legendary players, Panagiotis Giannakis. Having created one of the best teams in European history, ARIS conqueres the doulbe with ease.In 1987 ARIS forced European Champion Tracer Milan their largest European defeat by 98-67, but was not able to continue in the European Cup of Champions. 1988 was the year that ARIS would join the group of European Champions and battle for a spot in the first Final Four of the European Cup of Champions.Creating a tradition in Europe, ARIS returns to the European Cup of Champions and qualifies with ease to the Final Four for a second consecutive year and is intent on bringing the title of European Champion to Greece. Unfortunately this will not come;not even the next year when Aris participates for a third time in a final four, this time in Zaragosa. March 16th, 1993 in Turin, ARIS achieved what it had not been able to do in the 3 consecutive European Final Fours... win a European title. The mediocre years are finally over. With the vision of returning to its rightfull place among Europes elite, ARIS seems to be reborn. In 2003 ARIS conquers the FIBA Champions Cup, which is the clubs 20th title, gaining a second star above the teams emblem. The next year Aris continues his trophy tradition and wins the greek cup, that makes his titles in basketball 21. Having conquered basketball for over a decade, it was ARIS that brought the sport of basketball to Greece as it is known today. ARIS is the team which brought the spectacle into Greek sports, ARIS is the team which brought the first European honors to Greek sports, most of all ARIS was the only team that was loved by all of Greece. Its not a coincidence that ARIS was voted by the Greek media as the best team in the country, regardless the sport, of the 20th century.
