Appenzell

Appenzell is a region in Switzerland consisting of the cantons Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, both are surrounded by the canton of St. Gallen. The town Appenzell is the capital of the canton Innerrhoden, whereas Herisau is the capital of the canton of Ausserrhoden. The two cantons were one between 1513 and 1597. In that year, religion reasons lead to the division of the former canton of Appenzell into the two halves known today.
