Appellate Department

Appellate department is the term used to distinguish the four appellate jurisdictions in New York state. In the intermediate appeal courts in New York each appellate department develops its own jurisprudence, much like the different United States District Courts can develop differing or even conflicting jurisprudence which can only be resolved should the cases be further appealed to the New York State Court of Appeals. The same is true of the various Courts of Appeal in France.
