Aoukar Depression

The Aoukar Depression is an area of south eastern Mauritania, bordering the Tagant Plateau. It was a large lake until about 1000 BC, during which time many people lived around its shores. It is now dry, covered in sand dunes and salt pans, and is known for the addax which lives in the region.
