The total area is 2.58% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,554 people, 7,507 households, and 4,977 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,188.0/km² (3,076.3/mi²). There are 7,937 housing units at an average density of 508.2/km² (1,316.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.52% White, 8.42% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.22% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 7.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,507 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
