AnsatsukenAnsatsuken (Japanese, Murderous/Assassin's Fist) is a form of martial arts practiced by Ryu, Ken, and Akuma in Capcom's Street Fighter fighting game series. It was created by its founder, Goutetsu, as an application of his principle of Hado. Almost all the techniques involved in Ansatsuken are designed to kill an opponent as quickly as possible, preferably in one strike. There are three major sets of techniques that make up Ansatsuken: Hado - It is the founding principle behind Ansatsuken. Through Hado, a martial artist utilizes his will (or intent) to draw in ki and project it out at an opponent as a concussive force. All other Ansatsuken ki techniques are merely different applications of Hado. Shoryu - Also known as "The Rising Dragon". This is a set of techniques where a martial artist uses ki to propel himself upward at his opponent. During the ascent, he is invincible to most attacks. Tatsumakisenpu - Also known as "One Thousand Wind". The martial artist's body is supported and spun above the ground on a column of spiralling ki for a limited time. Several striking and grappling techniques borrowed from Karate, Judo, and Taekwando were also included in the creation of Ansatsuken. Finally, there is a single, fatal technique called the Shun Goku Satsu which is taught to a very few at the highest levels of study. Since Ansatsuken was never a major school, only three people ever knew how to perform the Shun Goku Satsu: Goutetsu, Akuma, and Gouken. In Ansatsuken, only two students are taught at a time. That way, they would develop their own fighting tactics to better counteract their classmate. Furthermore, by training together the two pupils would create a bond that would help them push each other through the more rigorous lessons they'll have to face. Like any martial art based on a philosophy, the principles driving Ansatsuken were meant to be universal. As a result, any martial artist who embraces an Ansatsuken outlook in the application of his style can be called one of its practicioners. So someone like Gen, who is a master of Chinese kung fu, can be called a student of Ansatsuken even though he never studied under Goutetsu. That's the reason why he was so successful in countering Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu during the events of Street Fighter Alpha 2. A second school of Ansatsuken was founded by one of Goutetsu's students, Gouken. Gouken disagreed with Goutetsu's views on when lethal force should be applied. He was against killing, even if the practicioner was moved to act. As a result, life-threatening techniques such as the Shun Goku Satsu were not included in Gouken's school. Gouken even developed an alternate means of utilizing ki that wouldn't be fatal to the opponent. The art was weakened since Gouken made his Ansatsuken school the least violent of its kind, but Gouken believed that this art should be used as a means for self-defense rather than martial, life-threatening offense. The current grandmaster of Goutetsu's school of Ansatsuken is Gouken's brother Akuma. He gained the title in a duel to the death with his teacher, Goutetsu. However, Akuma has decided to focus entirely on a principle of the art known as Satsui No Hadou. He increased the lethalness of many techniques and included some Koppo moves. Although Goutetsu recognized Satsui No Hadou, it's not known if he ever used it. As for Gouken Ansatsuken, the grandmaster of that style is Akuma's nephew and Gouken's adopted son, Ryu. Ryu's brief brush with Satsui No Hadou during his first World Warrior tournament and the events that took place during Street Fighter Alpha 3 has convinced him to reject Akuma's philosophy and focus on his father's style. Even though Gouken Ansatsuken initially started out weaker than its predecessor, Ryu's innovations to the style has brought it up to par by atleast the beginning of Street Fighter III. Both men consider their schools the one and only true heir to Ansatsuken. Related Characters See also * Shun Goku Satsu
