Annie Jones

Annie Jones (? - ?) was a US bearded woman who toured with P. T. Barnum. Annie Jones was born in Virginia. P. T. Barnum launched her as a new "infant Esau". When a New York phrenologist kidnapped infant Jones, Barnum and the police found her exhibited in a church fair. When the man claimed that the child was his, the matter went to court. Judge had Annie separated from the others before it was her time to testify. When Annie went straight to her parents when she was taken to courtroom, the judge declared the case closed. The whole matter might have been a pure P. T. Barnum publicity stunt. US photographer Mathew Brady took Jones's portrait when she was 18. Later in her career Jones toured in Russia and claimed she had to turn down painters who asked her to pose as Jesus. She became a musician and was married – and widowed – twice. Jones, Annie
