Andy Montaez

Andrés Montaez (born 1942), better known as Andy Montaez, is a famous Salsa singer from Puerto Rico. Montaez, like boxer Ossie Ocasio, is a native of the Tras Talleres area of Santurce San Juan. Montaez first gained fame as a member of the internationally successful El Gran Combo group. After leaving El Gran Combo, he enjoyed considerable success on an international scale with his own orchestra, touring Latin America and the United States several times. He represented Puerto Rico at the 1992 World expo in Barcelona, Spain. Two of Montaez's sons have also gone on to become salsa singers. On December 5, 2004, the tabloid television show, Superxclusivo, broke the news that Montanez had been involved in an elevator accident. Montanez did fall after an elevator's doors had opened as he was leaving the offices of fellow salsa singer Gilberto Santa Rosa, but he only fell about four feet and was able to escape only with minor scratches and a cut to his upper lip.
