Andrew J. Barberi

. The Staten Island Ferryboat Andrew J. Barberi is one of two Barberi-class ferry boats operated as part of the Staten Island Ferry between Manhattan and Staten Island in New York City. The Barberi was named after the former coach of Curtis High School's football team. Barberi coached throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s and was instrumental in the development of scholastic football on the Island. On October 15, 2003, the ferry Andrew J. Barberi was involved in a fatal accident. Eleven people died, and many more were injured, as a result of the Barberi crashing into a pier on Staten Island. As of 2004, the cause of the accident is still being investigated. As of July, 2004 the Barberi has been rebuilt (at the Brooklyn Navy Yard) and is back in regular service.
