And All That Could Have Been

And All That Could Have Been (also known as Halo 17) is a double DVD / double album set by Nine Inch Nails released in 2002. And All That Could Have Been is the seventeenth official Nine Inch Nails release. It consists of two DVDs of live concert footage from the "Fragility 2.0" tour, one CD of live music from the "Fragility 2.0" tour and one CD of remixed and original songs.

CD Version

There are two versions of the CD set. There is a limited edition set, packaged in a gray cloth case, that contains both the Live and Still CDs together. Live and Still were also sold separately. Still, however, was only available to order through the NIN official site and is currently out of print. Live contains live tracks from the Fragility 2.0 Tour. Still contains somber renditions of older songs and new material. All of the songs on Still were performed on piano, electric piano, or other electroacoustic instruments and backed by computer-generated synth textures. Of note is the song "Leaving Hope", which is also the publisher name Reznor has copywritten his music under since the beginning of his career. Reznor has stated that he was very depressed during the recording of the album. Due to the melancholy nature of the album, this was suspected by fans for quite some time.

DVD Version

There are also two different versions of the DVD set: one with a 5.1 Dolby Digital surround soundtrack and the other with a 5.1 DTS surround soundtrack. Other than this, both sets are identical. The DVD set is comprised of video footage from the 2002 Fragility 2.0 Tour. The band filmed the tour themselves using digital cameras and created the DVD themselves, editing it on an iMac using Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. This video was also released on one VHS tape. The DVD version has several easter eggs http://www.dvdtalk.com/eggs/read.php?ID=119. Hidden on disc 2 are three music videos and three Fragile-era commercials.

Message

The DVD edition includes a clear, plastic rectangle with a message from Trent Reznor written on it. It reads (using original formatting (aside from all-caps)):
just a glimpse
just a little reminder
of a time and place we
used to live in
this dvd attempts to
document the
experience of
nine inch nails live,
as we were in the
summer of 2000
we filmed and recorded
most of the dates of
the north american
fragility 2.0 tour
with home video cameras
then assembled
mixed and edited this
ourselves with our
home computers
in my eyes
fragility 2.0
was a summation of
what we had
accomplished up to
that time so this dvd
serves as a reminder
of achievement
as well as
a departure point
this is almost what
it felt like being there
