Amity High School

Amity High School is a regional high school system located in Woodbridge, Connecticut and organized to provide high school education (grades 10-12) for the children of the residents of the three towns of Woodbridge, Orange and Bethany. The technical name for this regional arrangement within the state of Connecticut is Regional District #5 -- the name Amity is derived from both the colonial history of Woodbridge as well as the "friendship" demonstrated among the three founding towns in arranging for a communal educational program. Amity Senior High School features an unusual grade arrangement of sophomores through seniors -- a division which was very popular during the 1960s; it is one of the last senior high schools within Connecticut to keep freshmen in the junior high system. Within the Amity regional district are two junior high schools with a similar mandate to provide education (grades 7-9) for the three towns. The junior high school program has two campuses -- one located in northern Orange, and the second in central Bethany. Budgets and administration are shared by the junior high campuses and the senior high school campus; costs are distributed proportionally across the three towns. The Amity district is in general known for high test scores within the state, and 85% to 90% of graduating students go on to attend higher education. For many years, this educational excellence has been a bedrock foundation for the member towns. In recent years, however, there have been many notable and debilitating controversies, most notably a scandal involving the faulty construction of a new senior high school campus. The current senior high school building features an auditorium that has been shut down for three years on account of high levels of breathable and partially-toxic mold stemming from poor construction practices. In addition, the new high school building was constructed over a swamp, and as such is sinking approximately 1.25 inches per year. A further scandal engulfed the district in the early 2000s when the town of Orange repeatedly demonstrated that its citizens were unhappy with school district board members for their roles in the scandal, as well as rapidly increasing budget costs, by voting "No" in more than ten education budget referendums.

Athletics

The school sports teams are known as "The Spartans" and "Lady Spartans". The district has a long-lasting rivalry with the town of Cheshire.
