Amandil

Amandil is a fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. Amandil was a Lord of Andni, suceeding his father Nmendil upon his death. Amandil is most noted for being the father of Elendil, who later went onto found the Nmenorean Realms in Exile. The name Amandil is Quenya for "Friend of Aman" signifying his devotion to the Valar in defiance to the policies of the King's Men. He was also the leader of the faction of Elendili ("Elf-friends"), or the Faithful, who endured persecution from the King's Men. In his youth Amandil was a great friend of Ar-Pharazon, the last king of Nmenor. Amandil was also famed across Nmenor for being a great sea-captain in the days of Nmendil. However when Ar-Pharazon brought the conquered Sauron from Middle-earth, his friendship with Amandil withered. As time passed, Ar-Pharazon began persecuting the 'Faithful' more vigorously. However, he could not do much harm to Amandil as he was still an influental member of the Nmenorean council and commanded respect among many people of Nmenor from his earlier days as the mighty ship-captain. Foreseeing the Downfall of Nmenor, Amandil urged his son Elendil to prepare for departure to Middle-earth, and he himself decided to travel to Valinor to beg the Valar for forgiveness for the evil deeds of his people. Amandil set sail east and later turned west (to hide what he was doing) towards Tol Eressa, and was never heard from again. Elendil and his sons, having escaped the cataclysmic destruction of Nmenor, made their way to Middle-earth to establish the Dnedain kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.
