Allenton (Derby)

Allenton is situated between Osmaston, Boulton, Alvaston and Shelton Lock. It is 3 miles South of Derby City Centre.

History

Allenton (formerly Allentown) was Named after Issac Allan who built the first house there in 1878. The whole area was once a swamp and the skeletons of a hippopotamus, elephant, brown bear, hyenna and bison have been found there. The Hippopotamus was found underneath the Crown Hotel (est. 1891) and is proudly displayed at Derby Museum.

Landmarks

Allenton is as well known by it's main landmark, the Spider Bridge. The bridge is so named because it has eight 'legs' in four directions. Each direction has both a set of steep steps and a stepped ramp for easier disabled access. The Spider Bridge was built in 1979 and has been various different hues over the years. Allenton boasts a cosmipolitan outdoor market, although this has been in decline in recent years. The shopping Centre in Allenton is amongst the largest of any of the cities suburbs although there are few highstreet chains except for Boots and Somerfield.

Culture

The culture in Allenton is tainted by a general low level of education, and the high prevelance of alcoholism is very obvious to night time visitors. However, in the daytime the atmosphere is friendly and it becomes a place worth visiting.
