Alfred-maurice De Zayas

Alfred-Maurice de Zayas (b. 1947) is a Cuban-born American researcher and historian, professor of international law, who has worked for the United Nations in the field of human rights. His published work has dealt with German refugee matters during and after World War II, a rather unpopular area. As of 2004, he is Secretary General of the International PEN in Geneva.

Alfred de Zayas has just launched his own website www.alfreddezayas.com containing many of his articles in full length, including the Douglas McK Brown lecture at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, on the issue of the Guantanamo Naval Base, 37 U.B.C. Law Review, 277-341 (2004) as well as more than 100 translations of Rainer Maria Rilke into English and Spanish, and reference to de Zayas' other books and poetry. His translations of Rilke's "Larenopfer" are to be published in December 2004 by Red Hen Press in Los Angeles, California. Alfred de Zayas is 56 years old, a retired senior lawyer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, former Secretary of the UN Human Rights Committee and former Chief of Petitions, visiting professor of law at the Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales He is also the author of Heimatrecht ist Menschenrecht, published by Universitas in Munich 2001. and co-editor with Gudmundur Alfredsson and Bertram Ramcharan of "International Human Rights Monitoring Mechanisms", Kluwer, The Hague, 2001.
