Alexander Kapranos

Alexander Paul Kapranos (born March 20, 1972 in Almondsbury, Gloucestershire) is the lead singer of the Glaswegian band Franz Ferdinand. He was born to a Greek father and a British mother. Kapranos spent his early childhood in Sunderland, his mother's hometown, and enjoyed spending summers visiting his father's native Greece. In his early youth, he moved with his family to Edinburgh. As a child, to fit in and avoid discrimination, he changed his surname to his mother's maiden name of "Huntley." At the age of seventeen, Alexander Kapranos Huntley attended the University of Aberdeen to study theology. He continued his studies at several different universities, including the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. It was in Glasgow that he discovered a flourishing music scene in which he could test his abilities. While working as a chef, a bartender, a teacher, and other various jobs, Huntley played in some of Glasgow's most popular bands, including The Amphetameanies, The Yummy Fur, and his own project, The Karelia. Eventually, as he changed his name back to "Kapranos," he formed a new band with old friends and new acquaintances, called Franz Ferdinand, which has received international attention as three hit singles have charted in the United Kingdom.
