Alerce
(
Fitzroya cupressoides
), also known as
Patagonian Cypress
, is a large
tree
in the cypress family (

conifers
. It is native to the
Andes
mountains of central
Chile
and adjoining
Argentina
, where it is an important member of the
Valdivian temperate rain forests
