Albuquerque Academy

The Albuquerque Academy is a private co-educational institution located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Academy was founded in 1955 as a school for boys. Between 1957 and 1964, the Academy received a large tract of undeveloped land north of Albuquerque. Sale of the land over the years and careful management of the proceeds created a $200 million endowment which since then has grown, placing the Albuquerque Academy among the highest endowed secondary schools in the United States. The Academy has an enrollment of just over 1,000 in grades 6 through 12, with students drawn from throughout the Albuquerque metropolitan area and surrounding areas. The school sits on an approximately 360 acre (1.5 km²) walled campus on the north side of the city on the base of the Sandia Mountains. The physical plant of the school consists of multiple buildings including the Albert G. and Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms Center for the Performing Arts, a library, science center, dinning hall, administration building, multiple class rooms, gymnasium, nine-lane track, 16 tennis courts, music building and natatorium Academy's 270 acre (1.1 km²) Bear Canyon tract in the Sandia Mountains and at other sites throughout the state. The student population of the Academy ranks among the most diverse for independent schools throughout the country. The school is roughly half boys and half girls, with nearly one third. comprising of students of color. The Academy also ranks among the top independent secondary schools with regard to financial aide offered to students, totaling nearly forty percent. Albuquerque Academy is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest and the New Mexico State Department of Education. Through the funds alocated to the school by the Sims family in 1965, Albuquerque Academy has been able to transform the school into one of the top schools of the nation. When ranked by (SAT) scores, the Albuquerque Academy ranks as the top scorer in the Southwest, and on the top ten list of the nation. It gives the most AP exams annually than any other school in the Southwest. At the same time, its tuition is at only $14,000 for the 05-06 school year including meals and books, which has only recently been on the rise due with recent planning on attemping to further sustain the endowmwnt. Schools throughout the nation that don't even give the quality of education that Albuquerque Academy gives charge close to $25,000 to $30,000. Academy life extends beyond the classroom. Techers at Albuquerque Academy allow for an enviroment for academic curiosity and other notable practices. The faculty at the school cares about students' lives outside the classroom and are activly involved in students' lives. All students who attend the school seem to enjoy their experience and hold the campus close to their hears throughout their lives as seen by the great amounts of alumni donations.
