Albion Rovers F.c. (Scotland)Albion Rovers Football Club (Albion Rovers F.C.) are a Scottish football team from the North Lanarkshire town of Coatbridge, who currently playing in the Scottish Football League. Their home stadium is the run-down Cliftonhill which was opened on Christmas Day 1919 and their home games usually attract a few hundred paying spectators. The club are currently (as of 2004) considering moving to nearby town Airdrie and sharing the Excelsior Stadium with Airdrie United. The sale of Cliftonhill would provide enough money to settle the club's debt and pay for rental in Airdrie in perpetuity. History The club was formed with the merger of Albion and Rovers in 1882. They play in red and yellow strips having changed from blue and white ones in 1961. Their greatest claim to fame is that they were Scottish Cup runners up in season 1919-20, losing in the final to Kilmarnock F.C.. Famous players in the club's past include former Celtic and Scotland manager Jock Stein, Bernie Slaven, Peter Dickson, John "Jock" White (the only player capped for Scotland while with the club), Tony Green and Jim Brown as well as many more. Rovers (as their fans prefer the team to be referred, rather than Albion) contested the 2003-04 season in the Third Division and have twice in the last two years been denied promotion on the final day of the season. This was most apparent in the 2002-03 season when an 89th minute goal by Kenny Deuchar of East Fife F.C. thwarted Rovers hopes. They are currently still playing in the Third Division.
