Albert Zafy

Albert Zafy (born 1927) is a Malagasy political figure. He was the president of Madagascar from March 27, 1993 to September 5, 1996. Zafy studied at the Montpellier University in France. After his return in Madagascar he became minister of Public Health and Social Affairs. After the coup of Didier Ratsiraka in 1975, Zafy was forced to resign. In 1988 he founded the National Union for Development and Democracy. At a national conference of the opposition in 1990, Zafy was elected president of Living Forces, a cooperation group of several opposition parties, including Zafy's National Union. In 1993 he defeated the long-time leader Didier Ratsiraka in multiparty elections. Zafy didn't solve the economic problems and after a while his popularity vanished. He was impeached in July 1996, and resigned in September 1996 when he lost a court challenge to the impeachment. He lost presidential elections to Ratsiraka in 1997. Zafy, Albert
