Albert Carnesale

Albert (Al) Carnesale (1936 - ) is chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also served as provost of Harvard University and has been involved in international diplomacy related to nuclear non-proliferation.

Education and early career

Carnesale began his university education at Cooper Union, completing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1957. In 1961 he finished a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Drexel University. Carnesale went on to earn a PhD in nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 1966. He also served as a member of the NCSU faculty from 1962 to 1969. Carnesale also worked as a senior engineer at Martin Marietta Corporation.

Diplomacy

Carnesale served as part of the U.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) with the Soviet Union held between 1970 and 1972. SALT I was a major step towards limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Between 1977 and 1980, he led the U.S. delegation to the International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Evaluation (INFCE). This sixty-six nation multilateral meeting intended to investigate and ultimately make recommendations regarding the relationships between civilian and military uses of nuclear energy and materials.

Harvard

Carnesale steadily ascended the ranks during his twenty-three year tenure at Harvard University. He began as a member of the faculty in 1974, and concentrated on the study of international relations, national security policy, and nuclear arms control. In 1981 he was promoted to Associate Dean of the Kennedy School of Government. A decade later, Carnesale became Dean, and served in that post from 1991 to 1995. Carnesale was tapped to fill the role of university Provost in 1994, where he served until 1997.

UCLA

Carnesale has served as Chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles since 1 July 1997. In addition to his ceremonial and administrative duties, he also teaches an undergraduate seminar in national security.

Family

Albert Carnesale shares his home with his wife Robin. They have four grown children and one grandson.
