Alan Pardew was appointed assistant manager of Reading F.C. in 1998, working under Tommy Burns. He was promoted to the position of manager when Burns resigned in November 1999, and guided Reading to promotion as English Division Two runners-up at the end of the 2001-2002 season. The following season they reached the Division One playoffs but lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. in the semi finals. In October 2003, Alan Pardew left Reading to become manager of West Ham United F.C.. That season they reached the Division One playoff final but lost to Crystal Palace, and in the 2004-2005 Coca Cola Football League Championship West Ham United are among the favourites to win promotion.
