Al Duerr

Alfred (Al) Herman Duerr, is a Canadian politician (born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan) who served as Mayor of Calgary, Alberta from 1989 to 2001. He served for four terms, winning his last three terms in landslides. Unlike most big city mayors, who are often local hate symbols, Duerr was remarkably popular during his time in office. Although he was often seen as unwilling to challenge the status quo, he suffered no serious scandals and avoided alienating any powerful groups in the city. His conciliatory, managerial style and likeable personality made him well respected. Since his retirement from the mayoralty, he has largely avoided politics in part because his membership in the Liberal Party virtually precludes much future in traditionally Conservative Alberta politics.
