Aktobe

Aktobe is the capital of the Aktobe Oblysy in Kazakhstan.It's population is 267,000 and it is situated on the Illeck River. It also has an influential Jewish Community.It was founded in 1869. During the Soviet Regime its name was Aktubinsk. The name "Aktobe" comes from the Kazakh "akt" for "white" and "tobe" for "mountain" because when Aktobe was first settled it is said that the people could see white mountains far in the distance to the north.
