Akron, AlabamaAkron is a town located in Hale County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 521. Geography Akron is located at 32°52'35" North, 87°44'28" West (32.876425, -87.740978). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 521 people, 207 households, and 142 families residing in the town. The population density is 365.7/km² (939.2/mi²). There are 239 housing units at an average density of 167.8/km² (430.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 17.85% White, 81.00% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 207 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.8% are married couples living together, 30.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.15. In the town the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 81.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 68.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $19,875, and the median income for a family is $21,250. Males have a median income of $22,396 versus $18,500 for females.
