AirdrieoniansAirdrieonians F.C. were a Scottish Football team that became defunt at the end of the 2001/2002 season. Founded in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire in 1878 as Excelsior Football Club, changing its name to Airdrieonians Football Club in 1881. The club enjoyed it's most succesful era in the 1920s. Finishing in second place in the Scottish League Championship four years in a row in 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1926. Airdrieonians also appeared in four Scottish Cup finals, winning the competition in 1924. In the 1992/1993 season the club competed in the European Cup Winners Cup as a result of being losing finalists in the Scottish Cup to League winners Rangers the previous season. The club went out of business on the 1st of May, 2002 after years of overwhelming debts. Despite finishing 2nd in the Scottish First Division that season, they would not receive the financial benefits of playing in the Scottish Premier League the following season. A new team in Airdrie emerged the following season under the moniker of Airdrie United F.C. taking a place in the Scottish Second Division after a buyout of Clydebank Football Club.
