Ain't Too Proud To Beg - "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" is also the name of a 1991 TLC single.
"Ain't Too Proud to Beg" is a 1966 hit single by The Temptations. Norman Whitfield became the group's main producer with the release of this single. Motown had a policy that the producer who had the biggest hits on a particular artist was assigned as the main producer for that artist, and was given preference when singles were selected for release by Motown's Quality Control department. In 1966, Norman Whitfield, who had produced a few of the Tempts' early singles, had recorded what he felt was a sure-fire hit, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", featuring a fiery lead by Ruffin. However, Berry Gordy released the Smokey Robinson-produced "Get Ready" with Kendricks on lead instead, since Robinson was the group's main producer. Whitfield was promised that "Ain't Too Proud" would be the next single if "Get Ready" underperformed. "Get Ready" hit #1 on the R&B charts, but only #29 on the pop charts. "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" was released, also hitting #1 on the R&B charts, but making it into the Top 20 at #13. Whitfield became the Tempts' new main producer, a role he would hold until 1974.
