After School Special

An After School Special is a genre of children's television. Aimed at teenagers or pre-teens, they were timed to be broadcast as those age-groups returned from school, usually at 4:00 PM (hence the name). Shows were first aired in 1972 and were typically one-hour in length, and some were aired as multi-part shows. In the USA, shows aired on the ABC Network were actually called "After School Specials", while those that aired on CBS were actually called Schoolbreak Specials. The name of the ABC shows is usually used to describe the entire genre. Both networks tended to use the young stars of their primetime shows in the specials. After School Specials tended to present life and moral lessons, and were often taped and shown in high school classrooms.
