adversity is defined as a state of misfortune or affliction, or it may be used to describe a calamitous event. It is related to the word "adverse" which means negative or contrary. Examples are "debt-ridden farmers struggling with adversity", "a life of hardship", "a stroke of ill fortune", and "a period marked by adversities."
