Advanced Power Management

Advanced Power Management (APM) is an API developed by Intel and Microsoft which allows a BIOS to perform power management, such as reducing the CPU speed, turning off the hard disk or turning off power to the display after a preset period of inactivity in order to conserve electrical power, especially for laptop computers. Monitors supporting such APIs are usually referred to as "green monitors", meaning environmentally friendly. This is not to be confused with a screensaver which is software that causes the display to go black (by setting every pixel to black) to prevent burn-in. ACPI is the successor of APM.
