abreaction photography

Abreaction photography is a method of creating photographs employed by Richard Genovese starting in 1987, utilizing the theory of Abreaction as a method of releasing suppressed emotions from subconcious levels of our awareness This catharsis, this heightened state of emotive behavior is encouraged by means of environmental stimuli. Theatrical application, sounds, lighting, and various props may be used in this regard. Virtually no directives are given, allowing a free reign of impulse to be guided by the subject in regards to her/his surroundings with an ongiong dialogue aimed at releasing emotive responses against the inhibitive forces that create an air of 'control' over one's behavior and attitude; the release of pent-up emotions is critical to achieve the heightened state into this 'abreaction' to liberate the subject. The results are merely captured on 'film'.
