A. E. W. MasonAlfred Edward Woodley Mason (7 May 1865 - 22 November 1948) was a British author. Mason was born in London. He studied at Dulwich College and graduated from Trinity College, Oxford in 1888. His first novel, A Romance of Wastdale, was published in 1895. He is the author of more than twenty books, among them The Four Feathers, originally published in London in 1905 ("likely the most filmed novel of the 20th century"). His next successful work was At The Villa Rose (1910), where he introduced his French detective, Hanaud. Mason rose to the rank of Major during the First World War serving with the Manchester Regiment and the Royal Marine Light Infantry. His military career included work in naval intelligence, serving in Spain and Mexico, where he set up counter-espionage networks on behalf of the British government. His other well-known works include The House of the Arrow (1924), No Other Tiger (1927), The Prisoner in the Opal (1929) and Fire Over England (1937).
