A Personal Record

A Personal Record is the 1912 autobiography of Joseph Conrad. It is the principal contemporary source for information about the author's life. It tells about his schooling in Russian Poland, his sailing in Marseille, and the influence of his Uncle Tadeusz. Because it was written close to his death, it does not show much about the novels and how they came to be. It does talk about Conrad's ill health and obstacles he had in writing his works, and about his life on French and British merchant ships. As a literary work, it tends to be ponderous and long. A Personal Record is available on Project Gutenberg. Personal Record Personal Record
