Zot!

Zot! is a comic book created by Scott McCloud in 1984 and published by Eclipse Comics until 1990. There were a total of 36 issues, with the first ten in color and the remainder in black-and-white. Main characters included:
  • Jenny, a sensitive teenage girl from our world
  • Bruce, her oafish brother
  • Zot, a blond haired, blue eyed hero from a golden age SF style universe who rides a rocket pack and fights villians with a laser gun.
  • Zot's Uncle Max, an eccentric inventor whose gadgets helped Zot fight crime
  • Peabody, Zot's robot butler/guardian
The story is notable for it's SF golden age influence, metafictional underpinning, and energetic visual design. The series hit it's creative peak with the final story arc, the "real world arc," where Zot is stranded in our universe for a number of months. He attends high school with Jenny and encounters problems such as poverty, bigotry, and alchoholism which are almost unheard of in his utopian earth. Also notable in the real world arc is an exlporation of teenage sexuality. Saddly, the comic has long been out of print and the real world arc has never been collected. In 2000, ten years after the last print issue appear, McCloud brought the series back in web comic format with a story called "Hearts And Minds," which comprised 440 panels spread out over 16 weekly installments.

Other Meanings of "Zot!"

Zot! is also the sound that the anteater makes in the B.C. comic strip authored by Johnny Hart. The mascot of the University of California, Irvine is an anteater based on the BC comic. Its battle cry is Zot!.
