Xu Chu

Xu Chu (许禇; style name: Zhongkang 仲康), was born in the village of Qiao (modern day Boxian, Anhui province). At the end of the Han Dynasty, Xu rallied thousands of family members and constructed fortresses to fend off the Yellow Turban rebels. He later surrendered to Cao Cao and became the commander of Cao's personal bodyguards. He participated in Cao's campaigns against Zhang Xiu, Yuan Shao, and Ma Chao and later became a general. He was nicknamed "Crazy Tiger (虎痴)" by Cao's soldiers due to his superhuman strength. In the novel Romance of Three Kingdoms, Xu Chu (or Xu Zhu) was portrayed as a large man, supposedly as wide as he was tall. He was one of Cao Cao's two bodyguards along with Dian Wei. He is also known for a famous duel against Ma Chao in which he fought bare-chested, not wishing to be slowed by the weight of armor. Then, after both his spear and Ma Chao's broke, they continued to battle on, using the splintered halves of wood as clubs.
