Local Facts

Windsor Heights is the smallest of the suburbs in the Des Moines area. It is bordered on the north by the city of Urbandale along Hickman Road, the east by Des Moines along 63rd Street, the south by West Des Moines along Walnut Creek and I-235, and in the west by Clive. It is sometimes derisively called "Radar Heights" by locals, because its small police force enforces the speed limit very strictly. Some have complained because the portion of University Avenue between 63rd and 73rd streets, a four-lane road, drops from 35 MPH to 25 MPH that this leads to more tickets from the already stringent police. The three biggest stores in town are Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and Hy-Vee.
