Winchester, VirginiaWinchester is a city located in the state of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,585. It is the county seat of Frederick County. Geography Winchester is located at 39°10'42" North, 78°10'0" West (39.178355, -78.166771). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²). None of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,585 people, 10,001 households, and 5,650 families residing in the city. The population density is 976.0/km² (2,526.7/mi²). There are 10,587 housing units at an average density of 438.1/km² (1,134.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.06% White, 10.47% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.46% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 6.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,001 households out of which 25.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.5% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.93. In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,335, and the median income for a family is $44,675. Males have a median income of $30,013 versus $24,857 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,500. 13.2% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Interesting Facts Winchester was the home town of Patsy Cline. Winchester is the location of the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, which include a carnival, the longest fireman's parade, the third longest grand feature parade, several dances and parties, and a corranation where the Apple Blossom Queen is crowned.
