Wilson's Magnolia

Wilson's magnolia, Magnolia wilsonii, is native to the provinences of Szechwan and Yunnan in China. It is a large spreading shrub or small tree of the forest understory. The elliptic/lanceolate leaves have brown pubescence on the underside and are 5-10in/3-5.5 cm long. The drooping, pure-white flowers with crimson centers are up to 10cm/4in in diameter on vigorous plants. Due to their drooping characteristic, flowers are best viewed from the underside. This tree is quite rare in cultivation and needs a protected planting location with afternoon shade.
