Wilde (Movie)

Wilde is a 1997 movie about Oscar Wilde, starring Stephen Fry. It is based on biographical notes by Richard Ellmann.

Plot

The film begins in the early eighties when O.W. comes back from lecturing in America. It describes his marriage, his wit, his homosexuality and his popularity and depicts his downfall caused by his prosecution for homosexuality and ends with Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas meeting after Wilde has left prison. Its frankness about Wilde's homosexuality, together with love-scenes, has made the film somewhat famous. In a rather terrible pun, Fry is said to have been "born to be Wilde".
